ABOUT CHIROPRACTIC
With over four million Canadians of all ages using the services of a chiropractor each year chiropractic is one of the largest primary health care professions in Canada. According to the Canadian Chiropractic Association, there were over 6,000 licensed and practicing chiropractors throughout the country in 2004.
In Ontario, The College of Chiropractors of Ontario (CCO) is the governing body established by the provincial government to regulate chiropractic. Every chiropractor practising in Ontario must be a registered member of the College. The College examines, registers and regulates the chiropractic profession in order to ensure the public receives safe and competent health care.
A chiropractic spinal adjustment is a drug-free, non-invasive manual procedure which is most often utilized in the treatment of various musculoskeletal ailments. Chiropractors receive four years of intensive and focused training to learn and refine their diagnostic and adjusting skills. The primary goal of chiropractic manipulation is to treat areas of decreased motion in the joints of the body, particularly the spine. This decrease in movement can lead to a reaction in the surrounding anatomy resulting in pain, dysfunction and muscular spasm.
Chiropractic has been the target of many evaluations to determine the safety, effectiveness, and value of its treatments. This has lead to a number of scientific studies which have demonstrated that chiropractic treatment, including spinal adjustments, improves function and is effective for common conditions such as headache, neck and back pain. It has also been shown that chiropractic treatment can help lead to fewer missed work days and is one of the most cost-effective methods for dealing with low back and neck pain.
